Washington, D.C. — Washington Commanders coach Dan Quinn put the blame on himself Monday for the overtime clock breakdown that turned a likely win over the New York Giants into a 27-27 tie.

With 55 seconds left and the ball at the Giants 26-yard line, Washington called a run for Rachaad White that gained 2 yards and kept the clock moving. The Commanders then substituted several players and did not snap the ball until 13 seconds remained. Jayden Daniels took off running on a called pass play and was tackled inbounds, leaving no time for another snap or a field goal try.

Quinn said he was furious with the team’s execution and called it a breakdown that cannot happen. He said end-of-game instructions need to flow from him to first-year offensive coordinator David Blough, who has the last word with Daniels on each down, and that the substitutions were unnecessary in hindsight.

The team wanted to burn more clock once in range because both kickers had struggled. Giants rookie Dominic Zvada went 2 of 5 on field goals, and Washington’s Drew Stevens had already missed an extra point.

Daniels, playing with a brace on his left elbow, ran for 103 yards with touchdowns of 38 and 26 yards. Washington has 12 games left and plays next at the San Francisco 49ers.
