Washington, D.C. — The University of Maryland club tennis team in College Park, Md., has been suspended indefinitely after members distributed tournament material that included racist imagery targeting Black people, university officials said.

The graphic was part of a shared Google document emailed to other regional university tennis clubs about a fall tournament at College Park on Saturday. Howard University club tennis players were among those who received it and reported a recognizable Ku Klux Klan symbol on the first page.

UMD Recreation and Wellness suspended the entire club pending an Office of Student Conduct investigation. The matter was also referred to the University of Maryland Police Department.

The club forfeited its tournament matches while other visiting teams continued play. Student leaders met visiting captains to apologize and sent an apology email to invited programs.

Brent Flynn, the university director of Recreation and Wellness, emailed recreation directors and club presidents at participating schools. University communications said the varsity tennis program is separate and unaffected.

Johns Hopkins University and Loyola University Maryland were among the regional club teams at the College Park event.
