WASHINGTON, D.C. — In Washington, D.C. United left Audi Field with a 2-1 home win over New York’s Red Bulls on Wednesday night, then protected the lead a man down after the hour mark.

Tai Baribo converted a fifth-minute penalty for his 15th goal of the season after Red Bulls midfielder Adri Mehmeti brought him down. Deep in first-half stoppage time, Keisuke Kurokawa delivered a corner kick that Baribo flicked onward, and Silvan Hefti finished with a header to make it 2-0 at the break.

Lucas Bartlett was sent off after a second booking around the 68th minute. Three minutes later, substitute Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting cut the deficit to 2-1 with help from Emil Forsberg and Ronald Donkor. Goalkeeper Sean Johnson finished with six saves to close out the points.

The result moved D.C. United to 7-9-12 and 33 points, including a 5-5-5 mark at home. New York fell to 10-13-6. Oscar Avilez made his MLS debut for the Black-and-Red and led all players with eight touches in the opposition box across 56 minutes.

United next visits Orlando City on Saturday, Oct. 17. The clubs had played to a 4-4 draw in New York in April.
