WASHINGTON, D.C. — Howard University broke a 17-17 tie with two fourth-quarter touchdowns Saturday and beat Morehouse College 31-17 in its homecoming game at Greene Stadium in Washington, D.C.
The Bison went ahead early on a 34-yard Matt Conord field goal, but the Maroon Tigers answered and the teams were level at 10 by halftime after a Morehouse kick as time expired.
Eden James gave Howard a 17-10 edge in the third quarter by racing 61 yards for a score on a single snap, and he finished with 120 rushing yards on 13 carries. Morehouse tied it again on a 10-yard scoring pass later in the period.
The winning drive covered 67 yards in 11 plays, and quarterback Ja’Shawn Scroggins capped it from a yard out with 6:50 left. Travis Kerney added a seven-yard run with 48 seconds to go. Scroggins scored twice on the day, and Howard ran for 201 yards with all four of its touchdowns coming on the ground.
Howard is now 3-4. Morehouse, a Division II member of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, fell to 3-5. The two schools, both founded in 1867, first played each other in 1923, and Howard also won last season’s meeting 38-10.
