WASHINGTON, D.C. — Marchers carrying No Kings signs and message-covered umbrellas moved through Washington, D.C., on Saturday, part of a string of protests across the region that organizers aimed at getting people to the polls before the midterm elections.

Several hundred people gathered on the former Black Lives Matter Plaza, just outside Lafayette Square near the White House, for events billed as the We the People Walk and the Umbrella Walk for Change. From there the group headed toward the U.S. Capitol, with organizers saying they want lawmakers to check the White House as an equal branch.

Another event began across the Potomac River at Memorial Circle in Arlington with a rally and voter fest, then marchers walked over Memorial Bridge and finished at the plaza by the Lincoln Memorial. Organizers set up tables where people could check what is on the ballot, confirm their registration and learn when they can vote.

Smaller gatherings dotted the city as well, including one near the Friendship Heights Metro station, while other rallies took place in Maryland and Northern Virginia. Some Metro stations, among them Arlington Cemetery, were closed for the Memorial Circle event.

Earlier No Kings protests leaned on big street crowds. This round shifted toward turnout and early voting, with local groups including Third Act DMV and Indivisible Route One Corridor taking part. The rallies grew out of the 50501 Movement, a national group that describes itself as nonviolent.
