WASHINGTON, D.C. — Lower-income households in Washington can now apply for another year of help with their electric, gas and water bills. The District Department of Energy and Environment began taking applications Oct. 20 for the fiscal 2027 round of its Utility Discount Program.
Approved households can save up to $475 a year on electricity, or $300 for homes without electric heat, up to $276 on winter gas bills and more than $962 a year on water and sewer service. Bills must be in the applicant’s name and household income must fall under the program’s limits.
Residents can apply online or mail a paper form with copies of recent utility bills, proof of income for every earner in the home and Social Security cards for everyone in the household. Questions go to 311.
The program ties into discounts that show up on monthly bills. For Pepco customers, the Residential Aid Credit covers roughly a quarter of a typical participating household’s bill, according to the D.C. Public Service Commission. On the gas side, the enrollment year for the residential discount starts each Oct. 1, and the discount applies from November through April.
