WASHINGTON, D.C. — The most anticipated debut in years for the Washington Wizards will have to wait. AJ Dybantsa, the top overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, will not play in Wednesday night’s season opener at home against the Milwaukee Bucks, coach Brian Keefe said Tuesday.

Keefe listed the rookie forward as day-to-day with a sprained ankle. Dybantsa got hurt in the preseason finale against New Orleans last week, coming down awkwardly after a jumper in the second quarter. He had put up 12 points in 15 minutes before leaving.

He remains on the opening day roster, and the team gave no timetable beyond the day-to-day label. His next shot at a first regular season game is Friday, when the Toronto Raptors visit the District.

Washington landed Dybantsa in June, its first No. 1 overall selection since taking John Wall in 2010. He led the nation in scoring during his lone season at BYU, averaging 25.5 points a game.

The rookie joins a rebuilt roster led by Trae Young and Anthony Davis, both past All-Stars, with Khris Middleton and Deandre Ayton also in the mix.
