WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Washington Spirit have locked up midfielder Deborah Abiodun for at least two more seasons, announcing Thursday a new contract that runs through 2028 and carries a mutual option for 2029.

Abiodun signed with Washington ahead of 2025, then opened her pro career on loan with Dallas Trinity FC for several months. Washington brought her back in August 2025, and she became a regular in the midfield as the Spirit pushed to the NWSL Championship.

Through 21 matches in a Spirit uniform, she has scored once and set up one goal. Sporting director James Hocken praised her energy without the ball and her composure with it.

Her 2026 season ended early with a hip injury. The club moved her to its season-ending injury list, and she went under the knife in September.

Abiodun, from Oyo, Nigeria, has played for the Nigerian national team since 2022, with trips to the 2023 Women’s World Cup and the 2024 Olympics. She played two seasons at Pitt, scoring 10 goals. Washington wraps up its regular season at home on Sunday, Nov. 1, when Chicago Stars FC visit Audi Field.
