WASHINGTON, D.C. — The American University volleyball team kept its perfect Patriot League record intact Saturday night, Oct. 24, beating Holy Cross in four sets at the Meltzer Center in Washington, D.C., to stretch its winning streak to 12 matches and lock up a place in the conference tournament.

The Eagles won 25-13, 19-25, 25-20 and 25-15 to move to 16-4 overall and 11-0 in league play. Holy Cross fell to 12-12 and 5-6. American had also beaten the Crusaders in five sets in Worcester, Mass., on Sept. 18.

Setter Deniz Dakak posted her second double-double in as many nights and 10th of the season, handing out 41 assists with 13 digs, six kills and two aces. Elise Sterling led the attack with 13 kills and seven blocks while hitting .370, and Sophie Dufour added 11 kills. Libero Bella Marrero had a team-best 19 digs.

American opened with one of its most lopsided sets of the year, hitting .615 in the first frame and building a lead as large as 13 points. Holy Cross answered with six blocks to take the second set, but the Eagles pulled away late in a tight third set, taking seven of nine points after an 18-18 tie, and controlled the fourth.

The Eagles go on the road next weekend, playing at Lehigh on Friday, Oct. 30, and at Lafayette on Saturday, Oct. 31. The Patriot League tournament opens Nov. 17.
