WASHINGTON, D.C. — More than three years after a baby boy died in a Southeast home in Washington, D.C., the Metropolitan Police Department has charged a 29-year-old man with first-degree murder in the case.
Investigators said Dion Phelps of Southeast was charged Friday, Oct. 23, and is accused of killing King Phelps, who was 7 months old. Detectives from the department’s Fugitive Unit served the charge at the DC Jail under a booking order issued by D.C. Superior Court.
King died in the early hours of March 16, 2023. Officers were sent to the 1300 block of Morris Road around 2:18 a.m. after a call about an infant who was not breathing. Fire and EMS crews found no signs of life, and the child was pronounced dead where he was found.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner later determined the boy died from complications of blunt force trauma and ruled the death a homicide. Police have not said how the two are related.
Local felony cases filed in D.C. Superior Court are handled by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, which assigns senior trial attorneys to prosecute killings in the city. No court date had been announced.
