CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Washington, D.C.’s Wizards rallied to within a single possession late Monday night but could not finish the job, falling 110-103 to the Charlotte Hornets and slipping to 2-2.

Anthony Davis carried Washington with 29 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double, while Trae Young chipped in 22 and Kyshawn George 20. The Wizards opened the third quarter down 10, then ripped off a 14-6 burst that pulled them to 60-59 before Charlotte answered with eight straight points and took a 12-point edge into the fourth.

Brandon Miller did the most damage for the Hornets with a career-high 39 points, three steals and two blocks, and he sealed it with a jumper and two free throws in the last minute. Naz Reid added 18, Grayson Allen scored 15, and Moussa Diabaté controlled the glass with 17 rebounds, eight of them offensive in the first half alone.

A Reid sequence midway through the fourth stretched Charlotte’s cushion to a game-high 14. Washington hit five late 3-pointers and trimmed the gap to 103-100 with 1:13 remaining, but missed chances on the boards and Hornets free throws closed it out. Charlotte moved to 3-1.

Forward Justin Champagnie hurt his right foot in the opening quarter and did not come back, and top draft pick A.J. Dybantsa again sat out with a sprained left ankle.
