WASHINGTON, D.C. — Children who are fighting cancer, or have beaten it, will hear their names called with the starting lineup when the Washington Capitals host the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday, Nov. 19, the club’s Hockey Fights Cancer Night at Capital One Arena.

The month starts earlier. On Nov. 5, the whole Capitals roster will skate after practice with kids in treatment or remission and their families connected to four groups: MedStar Health, Sunrise Day Camp Greater Washington, Make-A-Wish and Blood Cancer United Mid-Atlantic.

On game night, players will walk in wearing special jerseys that the team foundation will later sign and auction. Arena boards will glow lavender, the campaign color, and fans can have the names of loved ones who fought cancer shown on the ice. Sponsor Leidos will hand the Monumental Sports and Entertainment Foundation a $40,000 check for the night’s charities and give every fan a rally towel.

Money from the game’s 50/50 raffle will go to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.

Hockey Fights Cancer is run jointly by the league and its players union. This season every one of the 32 NHL clubs is staging its own awareness night, with the effort raising money for cancer research and urging fans to get recommended screenings.
