WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — A onetime San Francisco 49ers running back is in custody after Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies say he bolted on foot from a traffic stop Wednesday afternoon and led them on a search through a residential neighborhood.

Deputies identified the man as Joseph Williams, 33. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said they first stopped him on suspicion of speeding at about 4 p.m. at La Brea and Fountain avenues, then sent him on his way with only a verbal warning.

Not long after, deputies found that a felony warrant was out for his arrest in a stolen property case. When they tried to stop him a second time, the department said, he got out of his car and ran.

Patrol units fanned out across the Eastside area, checking yards along streets including Poinsettia Place. Deputies said Williams at one point tried to get into a home there, pounding on a locked screen door and demanding to come inside, but he never got in.

Deputies caught him near Formosa Avenue and Romaine Street. Booking records list suspected counts of receiving stolen goods, resisting or delaying deputies, vandalism and trespassing, plus a probation violation. He remained jailed Thursday with bail set at $50,000.

The department did not release details about the underlying stolen property case or what was damaged during the chase. The allegations have not been proven in court.
