PROVO, Utah — Eighth-ranked BYU let a 14-point halftime cushion disappear Saturday, then marched 95 yards in the fourth quarter to put away Arizona State 27-20 at LaVell Edwards Stadium.

Quarterback Bear Bachmeier finished with 236 passing yards and a touchdown, and running back Sione Moa scored twice. The Cougars improved to 7-1 overall and 4-1 in Big 12 play, while the Sun Devils dropped to 4-4 and 2-3.

BYU controlled the first half, holding Arizona State to 93 yards and piling up six sacks over the game. Moa got the opening score in odd fashion, picking up a Bachmeier fumble near the goal line and carrying it in. After the game, the Big 12 said replay had gotten that call wrong and BYU should have been left with third-and-goal at the 2. Bachmeier later hit Kyler Kaspar for a 13-yard touchdown and a 17-3 lead at the break.

Jake Fette, making the first start of his career, rallied the visitors in the third quarter. He found Omarion Miller for a 20-yard score and Anthony Miller Jr. from a yard out to knot the game at 17. Cardae Mack gave Arizona State 170 all-purpose yards.

Matthias Dunn put BYU back on top with a 45-yard field goal. On the clinching march, Bachmeier kept the ball himself on fourth-and-1 from his own 14 and later converted a fourth-and-4 throw at the Arizona State 6. Moa plunged in from a yard out with 2:09 to play.

It was the third road loss to a top-10 team this season for Arizona State.
