WASHINGTON, D.C. — A problem at the Pepco I Street Substation left more than 1,100 homes and businesses in the Foggy Bottom neighborhood of Washington without electricity for several hours on Monday, the utility said.

D.C. Fire and EMS crews were sent to the 1800 block of H Street NW after smoke was seen rising from several manholes. Pepco crews joined them to deal with a power surge and the outages across the neighborhood.

At its peak, the outage touched about 1,176 accounts in Foggy Bottom and nearby parts of downtown. Pepco said early on that it had no estimate for restoration and asked people to keep away from work areas.

By about 2:20 p.m., the company reported that service was back for every affected customer. Pepco said it saw no sign of foul play, and the cause is still being investigated.

Customers can report outages or check updates through the Pepco app or by calling 1-877-737-2662.
