BRUNSWICK, Maine — Bowdoin College said Tuesday that B.J. Hammer is no longer head coach of its football program, with the change taking effect Nov. 1.

The move follows a leave of absence that began Oct. 22, partway through Hammer’s seventh year with the Polar Bears. The school has not said why he left the sideline.

Nick Turchyn took over as interim coach in late October, and the team lost 10-3 to Trinity in an early game under him. He will stay on as interim head coach for the final two games, against Bates this Saturday and Colby the following Saturday. Bowdoin said it will start a national search for a permanent coach right away.

Bowdoin has yet to win a NESCAC game this fall and sits at 0-7 in league play.

Bowdoin hired Hammer in 2019, and he carried a 13-41 record into the 2026 season. He had earlier coached at Division III Whittier College in California and Allegheny College in Pennsylvania.

Turchyn came to Bowdoin this season as tight ends coach after serving as offensive coordinator at Gettysburg College and spending three years on the Princeton staff as a senior analyst and quality control coach.
