WASHINGTON, D.C. — Democrats won governor’s races in several states Republicans have long controlled on Tuesday, putting the party within reach of holding most of the nation’s governorships for the first time since the 2006 midterms.

In Texas, state Rep. Gina Hinojosa unseated Republican Gov. Greg Abbott. She will be the state’s first Latina governor and its first Democratic governor in decades.

Ohio voters handed the governorship to Amy Acton, the Democrat, over Trump-endorsed Republican Vivek Ramaswamy, making her the first woman elected governor of Ohio and the first Democrat to win the office there since 2006. She told supporters the healing begins today.

Iowa Democrat Rob Sand beat Republican Zach Lahn in a state Trump has carried three times. Wisconsin voters chose Democrat David Crowley over Republican Tom Tiffany, making him the state’s first Black governor. Crowley had left the race and later rejoined at the urging of outgoing Gov. Tony Evers.

Democrats also kept the governor’s office in large states. Gov. Josh Shapiro won another term in Pennsylvania over Stacy Garrity, and Gov. Kathy Hochul was reelected in New York. Deb Haaland won in New Mexico and becomes the first Native American woman elected governor of any state. Xavier Becerra becomes California’s first elected Latino governor.

Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs and Alaska Democrat Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins were well ahead with roughly a third of the vote in those states still uncounted. In Florida, Republican Rep. Byron Donalds beat Democrat David Jolly and will be the state’s first Black governor.
