MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. — Indiana put Jeffrey Weisheit to death by lethal injection early Thursday at the Indiana State Prison, the state’s first execution this year.

The Indiana Department of Correction said the lethal injection got underway just after midnight on Nov. 5, and the 50-year-old was declared dead at 12:45 a.m. Central time. He made no final statement.

The Indiana Supreme Court had ordered the execution for the 2010 deaths of a brother and sister, ages 5 and 8, who died when Weisheit set fire to their home in the Evansville area while dating their mother.

Gov. Mike Braun turned down requests from defense lawyers to allow brain scans tied to claims of past head injuries and mental illness, and he declined to commute the sentence to life in prison. His lawyers also challenged the drugs and procedures the state planned to use, which were supplied by a pharmacy facing state disciplinary proceedings. The Indiana Supreme Court voted 3-2 on Wednesday to deny an emergency stay.

After the execution, Braun said in a statement that state and federal courts had reviewed the case many times without overturning the sentence.

Florida and Alabama each had an execution scheduled later Thursday, making Thursday only the second date in 2026 on which three states planned to carry out death sentences.
