ST. LOUIS, Mo. — Saint Louis University forward Robbie Avila sat out the Billikens’ Friday game against Missouri after the College Sports Commission refused to let the school carry him as a 16th player, one day after a judge ruled he could play.

On Thursday, Judge Jason Sengheiser of the St. Louis City Circuit Court granted Avila a preliminary injunction for a fifth season of eligibility and said Saint Louis could add an extra roster spot for him until the case goes to trial, which could be months away.

The commission, created in 2025 to enforce the House v. NCAA settlement that set up revenue sharing, answered Friday that the settlement caps men’s basketball rosters at 15. It said Saint Louis chose to opt into that settlement twice and chose to fill every spot, and that a state court order cannot require it to break the terms of a federal settlement. The commission said it takes no stance on whether Avila is eligible, only that the Billikens have no room for him.

The university then announced Avila would not dress for the Missouri game at Enterprise Center. It said he will keep pursuing his eligibility and that the school will back him.

Avila was the Atlantic 10 Player of the Year last season, when he put up 12.8 points a game to go with 4.1 assists and 4.5 rebounds. He went undrafted in 2026 and spent the summer with the Los Angeles Lakers’ Summer League team on an Exhibit 10 deal, which he told the court he agreed to verbally but never physically signed.
