LOS ANGELES — Rams safety Quentin Lake said Friday that he has reached out to Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert by text to apologize for poking fun at him on a podcast earlier in the week. Lake said he had not received a reply.

Lake picked off Herbert once in the Rams’ 24-9 win over the Chargers last Sunday, and teammate Trent McDuffie added a second interception. Appearing afterward on a podcast run by the St. Brown brothers, Lions receiver Amon-Ra and former NFL wideout Equanimeous, Lake joked that the quarterback was seeing ghosts and tossing deli meat.

The remarks spread quickly. Lake, a high school teammate of Amon-Ra St. Brown at Mater Dei, said he was relaxed among friends and trying to be funny, but realized the show reaches a large audience and that his words could be taken in a way he did not intend. He said he meant no disrespect.

He added that he still views Herbert as a great quarterback, pointing to his arm strength, mobility and ability to read defenses, and said the Chargers roster remains talented.

Asked about the comments Wednesday, Herbert said he had not seen or heard them and that the team was concentrating on its own work. Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh defended his quarterback, saying he disagreed with that view and that Herbert did his job very well in the passing game apart from two throws he would want back.

The criticism stung partly because of how the season has gone. The Chargers are 0-7, and Herbert has five touchdown passes against a league-high 10 interceptions, with at least one pick in every game.
