RALEIGH, N.C. — In Raleigh, Washington’s Capitals absorbed a 4-2 defeat at Lenovo Center on Tuesday as Carolina’s Andrei Svechnikov buried two goals, the last with just over six minutes left.
Boone Jenner put Washington on the board first midway through the opening period. Svechnikov answered early in the second, Justin Holl restored the Capitals’ lead from the right circle, and a late second-period deflection by Eric Robinson tied the score again.
Svechnikov then converted on the power play after Justin Sourdif’s tripping minor, and Mark Jankowski also found the net in Carolina’s sixth straight win. Logan Thompson turned aside 31 shots for Washington; Pyotr Kochetkov stopped 20 at the other end and moved to 4-0-0.
Ryan Leonard set up two Capitals goals. Captain Alex Ovechkin, on what is billed as his final regular-season trip to Raleigh, heard a standing ovation early and finished without a point. Jenner has now scored in three consecutive games.
Carolina played without captain Jordan Staal, who has a partial calf tear and is expected to miss a month or more. Forward Taylor Hall exited midgame with an upper-body issue, and Carolina called up Bradly Nadeau from its AHL club Wednesday ahead of a Western road swing.
