Daniels Owns Overtime Gaffe Ahead of 49ers Trip

Ashburn, Va. — Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels told teammates this week that the overtime clock collapse against the New York Giants was on him, then repeated that message to reporters as the club prepares for Monday night against unbeaten San Francisco.

Daniels said he is the player who must keep the field calm and that he fell short of his own standard when he was tackled inbounds instead of getting out of bounds or spiking with no timeouts left. Washington needed only a field goal after a Giants fumble in the extra period, but the clock expired in a 27-27 tie.

Coach Dan Quinn again took organizational blame for the sequence and said the team has hard lessons to apply against San Francisco, still undefeated at 5-0. Offensive coordinator David Blough had relayed the timeout situation, Daniels said, and the quarterback wants sharper awareness in those moments.

A win over New York would have lifted the Commanders (1-3-1) in the NFC East during a week when Philadelphia and Dallas both lost. Instead the club heads west trying to avoid a hangover before a bye and a Nov. 1 date with the Eagles.

Daniels said supporters inside the locker room are telling him to move forward. He called the lapse uncharacteristic and vowed it will not happen again.
