WASHINGTON, D.C. — Washington leaders are trying a new pitch to fill public safety jobs. Mayor Muriel Bowser, joined by Lindsey Appiah, her deputy mayor overseeing public safety and justice, on Thursday rolled out DC Calls, a hiring push for the Metropolitan Police Department, DC Fire and EMS and the Department of Corrections.
City officials describe it as the District’s first comprehensive recruiting effort for public safety. Ads will appear on social media and streaming services and on billboards around the region, built around the stories of people who already work in the three agencies. The first focus is on police officers, firefighter-paramedics and corrections officers.
Applicants are pointed to a new campaign website, which says there is no requirement to live in Washington when applying to any of the three agencies. Police recruits who move to the city can get up to $6,000 in rental help. Police hiring averages two to three months from application to offer, while fire and corrections hiring can take as long as six months.
Because each department handles its own hiring, a candidate may seek jobs with several of them simultaneously, according to the site.
