WASHINGTON, D.C. — A Metropolitan Police Department officer shot a man early Thursday, Oct. 29, in Washington, D.C., minutes after police say that man shot someone waiting at a bus stop on Minnesota Avenue NE. The man shot at the bus stop has since died, according to the department.

Interim Chief Jeffery Carroll said the first call sent officers around 5 a.m. to the 4100 block of Minnesota Avenue, where they found a man who had been hit by gunfire. While they were working that scene, word came in of a person shooting in a parking lot a couple of blocks south, in the 3900 block.

Carroll said the man officers found there fired in the direction of a shopper leaving a store. One officer answered with a patrol rifle and struck him. Police recovered his handgun.
