Washington, D.C. – A shooting incident occurring near the National Mall on Friday afternoon has left an older juvenile injured. The shooting was reported around 1:30 p.m. in the 600 block of Maryland Avenue SW. The victim was shot multiple times and managed to seek help by running into a building. While the injuries sustained by the victim—bullet wounds to the arms and legs—are not believed to be life-threatening, the incident has raised concerns among local authorities and the community.
Responders discovered the victim in the lobby of the Graduate School USA building. The police later revealed that two young individuals had been involved in a dispute that escalated into gunfire. Additional police units from federal agencies quickly arrived on the scene and cordoned off the area to ensure public safety. Authorities have not disclosed the exact age of the victim, but it has been confirmed that he knew the shooter, and the two were seen walking together prior to the shooting.
A bullet from the incident also caused damage to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, penetrating a window. Fortunately, no injuries were reported at the museum; however, the Independence Avenue entrance was closed shortly thereafter. It was also reported that at least one bullet struck a nearby van, shattering its windows. Notably, tourists from Spain were traveling in the van but had left for lunch shortly before the shooting took place.
Following the shooting, police were seen actively investigating the scene and discovered multiple shell casings outside a nearby Holiday Inn. They subsequently closed 6th Street SW between Maryland Avenue and E Street for the ongoing investigation. Moreover, the shooting coincided with dismissal time for students at the nearby Richard Wright Public Charter School, where the victim was enrolled. The school employs a “Man the Block Plan” for safer student dismissals, underscoring the community’s commitment to ensuring student safety.
As of now, the investigation remains ongoing, and no suspects have been identified. Law enforcement is working to piece together the events leading up to the shooting in hopes of preventing future incidents and ensuring the safety of the public.
