Ongoing construction on I-16 as part of improvement projects creating lane closures.
The Georgia Department of Transportation has announced planned lane closures on Interstate 16 as part of their 16@95 Improvement Projects. These closures, occurring from July 14 to July 19, will facilitate vital widening and reconstruction work at the I-16/I-95 Interchange, aiming to improve traffic flow and safety. Lane closures will occur intermittently during both daytime and nighttime hours, with specific schedules outlined to minimize disruptions. Motorists are advised to stay informed about the ongoing construction and alternative routes during this period.
The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) has announced a series of planned lane closures on Interstate 16 (I-16) as part of the ongoing 16@95 Improvement Projects. The closures will facilitate widening efforts and the reconstruction of the I-16/I-95 Interchange, with closures beginning on July 14 and continuing through July 19.
The primary goal of the project is to improve traffic flow and safety along this busy corridor. To achieve this, various sections of lanes will be intermittently closed, both during daytime and nighttime hours. These closures are essential to carry out widening activities and perform bridge work at the I-16/I-516 Interchange.
During the hours of 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily from Monday, July 14, to Saturday, July 19, lane closures will be enforced on I-16. Additionally, there will be intermittent closures affecting right- and left-lanes from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and within 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. These closures are designed to minimize traffic disruptions during peak travel periods while allowing the construction work to proceed safely.
Nighttime lane closures will also be in effect from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. nightly, spanning the entire period from July 14 to July 19. During these hours, intermittent lane closures will be implemented, including right- and left-lane closures from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., and double-lane closures from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.. These overnight closures are critical for more extensive work that requires reduced traffic during lower travel volumes.
In addition to scheduled intermittent closures, two continuous right-lane closures are planned. The first will be in effect from Friday, July 11, through Monday, July 14, from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.. The second will occur from Friday, July 18, through Monday, July 21, from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.. These long-term closures are necessary to accommodate ongoing construction activities related to widening and bridge work.
For public safety and to minimize inconvenience, detour information will be communicated through official channels, with red text used for guidance. The Georgia DOT encourages drivers to stay informed about upcoming lane closures and detours to plan travel accordingly.
The 16@95 Improvement Projects are part of Georgia DOT’s broader efforts to enhance infrastructure and traffic safety along major corridors. Widening I-16 aims to reduce congestion, accommodate increasing traffic volumes, and improve overall road safety. Reconstruction of the I-16/I-95 Interchange is also expected to enhance interchange performance and travel efficiency in the region.
Motorists are advised to exercise caution around construction zones, obey posted signs, and seek alternative routes when possible during the closure periods. The project is scheduled to continue until the completion date, with updates provided regularly to ensure the public remains informed of progress and any changes to the schedule.
