Construction zones require vigilant driver attention to protect workers.
A tragic accident on I-95 in Greenwich claimed the life of Traymont Tucker, a construction worker from Waterbury, who was struck by a vehicle while performing his duties in a construction zone. The incident occurred early Saturday morning, leading to his immediate death and raising concerns about safety for highway workers. The driver of the vehicle sustained minor injuries and the incident remains under investigation by state police. The local community and officials are emphasizing the need for enhanced safety measures in construction areas.
Early Saturday morning, Traymont Tucker, 38, a construction worker from Waterbury, was struck and killed by a vehicle along I-95 in Greenwich. The incident occurred around 2:25 a.m. while Tucker was working within a designated construction zone on the northbound side of the highway.
The fatal crash took place just south of exit 3, an area where a left travel lane was closed to accommodate ongoing construction activities. A Dodge Durango, driven by Osvaldo Vela, 38, from Yonkers, N.Y., was involved in the collision. Tucker was positioned in the work zone at the time of the accident and was immediately struck by the vehicle.
Emergency responders from Greenwich EMS arrived at the scene promptly and pronounced Tucker dead at approximately 3 a.m. The driver, Vela, sustained minor injuries during the crash and was transported to Stamford Hospital for treatment. Local authorities did not report any other injuries resulting from the incident.
State police, along with Greenwich Fire Department personnel and officials from the Department of Transportation, responded quickly to the scene to conduct an investigation. As part of the response, I-95 northbound was temporarily shut down in the area of the crash to allow for thorough investigation and scene management. The highway was reopened shortly before 10 a.m..
The incident is under active investigation by state police. As of Saturday afternoon, no criminal charges have been filed against Vela, and authorities are examining all factors related to the crash. Officials are urging witnesses who may have observed the event or possess relevant information to contact Trooper George Lyman or reach out to Troop G in Bridgeport.
Connecticut Department of Transportation Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto expressed condolences to Tucker’s family and acknowledged the dangers faced by highway workers working near moving traffic. Eucalitto underscored the importance of driver awareness, particularly emphasizing adherence to the “Slow Down, Move Over” law, which is designed to protect roadside personnel.
The local 146 laborers’ union issued a statement mourning Tucker’s loss, offering condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. The union highlighted the risks construction workers face when working close to traffic and called for increased safety awareness.
Many residents and commuters expressed sadness over the tragedy, reaffirming the need for drivers to slow down and exercise caution within construction zones. Community members pointed out that accidents like this underscore the critical importance of obeying traffic laws and remaining alert in areas where highway workers are present.
Law enforcement officials continue to investigate the circumstances leading to Tucker’s death. They are requesting anyone with relevant information to get in touch with authorities, as efforts to determine the cause and prevent future incidents continue.
The loss of Traymont Tucker highlights ongoing concerns about traffic safety, especially in construction zones, and underscores the importance of driver vigilance to protect those working on or near busy highways.
