Construction zones are marked for safety, yet dangers persist.
A tragic accident on I-95 in Greenwich has led to the death of a construction worker, Traymont Tucker. The incident occurred in an active construction zone when a vehicle veered off the highway, striking Tucker. He was pronounced dead at the scene, prompting investigations by Connecticut State Police. Safety concerns regarding construction zones have been raised, highlighting the need for better protection for workers.
An early Saturday morning crash on Interstate 95 in Greenwich resulted in the death of a construction worker. The incident occurred around 2:24 a.m. on the northbound side of the highway near exit 3, prompting a major response from authorities and closing the highway for several hours.
Traymont Tucker, 38, of Waterbury, was working as a private construction worker at the time of the accident. The area where the crash occurred was actively under construction, with the left lane of the three travel lanes closed to traffic. During this operation, a vehicle operated by Osvaldo Vela, 38, from Yonkers, N.Y., veered into the construction zone.
The vehicle struck Tucker, who was standing or working near the construction area. Greenwich EMS arrived at the scene and pronounced Tucker dead just before 3:00 a.m. The incident happened while the work zone was marked and visible, raising concern about safety measures for workers in such areas.
The driver of the vehicle sustained minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to Stamford Hospital for treatment. The vehicle involved in the crash was later towed from the scene. I-95 North was closed during the investigation, causing traffic delays for several hours. The highway was reopened just prior to 10:00 a.m., following the conclusion of initial investigative efforts.
The Connecticut State Police and Greenwich authorities are actively investigating the incident. Currently, no charges have been filed against the driver as of early Saturday afternoon. Witnesses or anyone with relevant information are encouraged to contact Troop G at 203-696-2500 or reach out via email to Trooper George Lyman.
The Department of Transportation expressed condolences regarding the loss of Tucker, emphasizing its sympathies to his family and loved ones. The department’s commissioner, Garrett Eucalitto, highlighted the dangers associated with highway construction zones and reiterated the importance of adhering to traffic laws, especially the Slow Down, Move Over law.
This tragic event underscores the risks faced by construction workers on busy roads and highways. State authorities emphasize the need for increased safety measures, compliance with traffic laws, and heightened awareness by drivers when passing through active work zones. Incidents like this point to ongoing efforts to improve pathway safety and prevent future accidents involving highway workers.
As the investigation continues, authorities hope to determine the exact circumstances leading to the crash and ensure such tragedies are minimized in the future. The incident remains a serious reminder of the importance of vigilance and caution in and around construction zones on major highways like I-95.
