Schools are adopting modern communication tools to improve interactions with parents.
As the new school year nears, schools in Lima and surrounding areas are adopting innovative digital communication tools to enhance parent engagement. This shift from traditional communication methods aims to streamline information regarding school events, cancellations, and emergencies. Districts like Bluffton and Spencerville are implementing systems like One Call Now and comprehensive mobile apps, ensuring timely updates and effective interactions with families. As parental involvement becomes increasingly important, schools are focusing on maximizing alert enrollments and promoting efficient communications to keep everyone informed.
As the new school year approaches in Lima and nearby districts, schools are increasingly turning to digital communication tools to keep parents informed and engaged. This shift from traditional methods aims to provide more immediate, targeted, and efficient updates regarding school events, delays, cancellations, and emergencies.
Historically, parental alerts focused on print notices, radio and television broadcasts, and paper notes sent home with students. These methods, while reliable, often resulted in delayed dissemination of critical information. With the widespread adoption of cellular devices, schools have integrated email and text messaging platforms to ensure faster communication.
Lima Schools have successfully utilized SchoolMessenger, a text alert platform, for several years. This system allows for immediate sending of alerts directly to parents’ mobile devices. Similar to Lima, Spencerville School District transitioned to One Call Now, a versatile notification system that supports personalized alerts for different groups such as general parents and sports teams. Spencerville spends approximately $4,000 annually on this service, which allows for targeted messaging, including alerts related to athletic events or school closures.
Bluffton Schools previously employed a text alert platform called Sendit, which ceased operations on July 31. The district responded by switching to One Call Now and is actively promoting sign-ups among families to maximize alert enrollment before the school year begins. Some districts, including Bluffton, automatically enroll families during the online registration process, while others require parents to manually sign up for alerts.
In addition to traditional alert systems, several districts, including Wapakoneta, have developed comprehensive smartphone apps. These apps serve multiple functions, such as issuing alerts, providing staff directories, sharing athletic schedules, and disseminating district news. Wapakoneta’s app utilizes a platform called Thrillshare, which consolidates calls, texts, emails, and social media posts into a single communication hub, streamlining interactions with families and the community.
The reliance on education apps has surged dramatically in recent years. In 2018, around 310 million users engaged with educational applications; by 2023, that number more than doubled to approximately 709 million users. This growth is partly attributed to the increased need for remote learning options during the COVID-19 pandemic. During that period, Google Classroom emerged as particularly popular, supporting virtual classes and communications.
Another widely used educational app is ClassDojo, which facilitates ongoing communication between teachers, students, and parents beyond standard announcements. Such apps have become integral to daily school operations, offering a centralized platform for updates, assignments, and feedback.
While these digital tools enhance communication, some parents may feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of alerts and notifications from multiple sources. Schools are aware of this challenge and aim to minimize notification overload by promoting sign-ups to select preferred communication channels and consolidating alerts where possible.
Districts like Bluffton are actively encouraging parents to register for alerts through various outreach efforts. The goal is to ensure a high enrollment rate before classes commence. Maintaining updated contact information and encouraging participation in alert systems are viewed as essential steps to promote smooth communication and swift dissemination of information throughout the school year.
As the new academic year approaches, the emphasis on integrating advanced communication technology reflects a broader effort to keep parents informed and involved. From automated phone calls and text alerts to mobile apps and comprehensive digital platforms, schools in Lima and surrounding areas continue to adopt tools aimed at improving engagement, efficiency, and safety for students and their families.
