Northern Bedford County has announced the opening of a state-of-the-art weight room at the high school, a significant upgrade aimed at improving student wellness and athletic development. The new facility, valued at $1 million, is part of a broader initiative to support student health and athletic performance, especially in light of challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The project was funded in part through the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund, a federal program designed to assist schools in recovery efforts. The initiative was driven by former athletic director Jeff Batzel, with strong backing from school board members and community stakeholders. Prominent supporters included individuals such as Mike Cottle and Chris Sipes, who contributed to securing resources and promoting the project.
The newly opened weight room, officially launched in November, is directly connected to the school campus, providing easy access for students during school hours. It replaces a previous, very limited space that was scarcely larger than a large walk-in closet, equipped with only two squat racks and two benches. In contrast, the new facility offers:
The new weight room is designed to benefit all students, not just athletes. It is accessible during physical education classes and school hours, encouraging participation among a broader student body. The improved environment provides more space and equipment, allowing students to train more efficiently and confidently. Senior student Justice Suter noted that the upgrades have significantly improved students’ workout capabilities and confidence, reducing equipment shortages and enabling more effective training sessions.
Football coach Garry Black emphasized that the equipment and facilities are crucial for supporting the athletic program. The upgraded training environment allows student-athletes to enhance their strength and conditioning, ultimately improving team performance. Additionally, Principal Shawn Cerully highlighted increased participation in physical fitness activities, attributing the trend to the welcoming, less intimidating atmosphere created by the new facilities.
The weight room is also viewed as an important step toward expanding opportunities for women’s athletics at Northern Bedford County High School. By providing access to modern strength-training equipment, the school aims to encourage more female students to participate in sports and improve their athletic performance.
Overall, school officials and coaches take pride in the community’s support and investment in student infrastructure. The new weight room represents a significant advancement in promoting student wellness, encouraging physical activity, and fostering athletic excellence across all genders.
