Safety concerns have led to the postponement of classes at Okmulgee High School, with repairs underway.
The start of the new school year at Okmulgee High School has been postponed to August 19, following the discovery of significant structural issues during an inspection. Loose bricks and deteriorating support materials were found, leading to safety concerns and the relocation of classes to the CAAT Building. The district assures no changes to the curriculum or schedule, while community support for the transition has been robust. The school board plans to use snow days to make up for lost instructional time.
Okmulgee, Oklahoma — The start of the new school year at Okmulgee High School has been postponed until Tuesday, August 19, 2025. Originally scheduled for earlier in August, the delay was prompted by unexpected structural issues discovered during a recent inspection, forcing school officials to take immediate safety precautions.
Approximately two weeks before the start of classes, inspectors identified significant damage within the high school’s existing building. Findings included loose bricks and deterioration of supporting materials, raising concerns about the safety and stability of the structure. These issues necessitated an emergency review by the school board and district officials to determine the next steps.
Superintendent LuVona Copeland confirmed that parts of the high school building would need to be closed off to ensure student and staff safety. Out of an abundance of caution, district leaders decided to relocate all high school classes to an alternative site until repairs could be made. This move was approved during an emergency school board meeting, emphasizing the priority placed on safety.
The district selected the Center for Aviation and Advanced Technologies (CAAT) Building to serve as the temporary location for high school students. The CAAT Building is currently occupied by Green Country Technology Center, but officials confirmed that there is enough space to accommodate both school populations without disrupting local educational operations.
Despite the relocation, district officials emphasized that no changes will be made to the curriculum or class schedules. Administrators and teachers are actively working to prepare the CAAT Building to host students, including setting up classrooms, installing necessary technology, and ensuring safety measures are in place.
The district will utilize three of their six allotted snow days to compensate for the lost instructional days caused by the delay. This adjustment ensures that students will still meet the required instructional hours for the academic year, even with the delayed start.
The district has indicated that bus transportation will be provided to ferry students involved in extracurricular activities and those attending classes at the new location. This ensures continuity of student participation in sports, clubs, and other school activities without interruption.
Community members and local businesses have stepped up to assist with the move, providing logistical support and food for students and staff during the transition. As of now, it remains uncertain whether students will return to the original high school building once repairs are completed, or if the temporary location will be used long-term pending the extent of structural damages and repair timelines.
Okmulgee High School has been an integral part of the local education system for years. The recent structural discoveries highlight ongoing challenges with aging school facilities and underscore the importance of routine inspections and maintenance. The district emphasizes that the safety of students and staff is its highest priority and is committed to completing repairs as swiftly as possible while minimizing disruptions to education.
