An empty poolside scene reflecting a tragic event.
Dr. Neha Gupta, a pediatrician from Oklahoma City, faces first-degree murder charges after the mysterious death of her four-year-old daughter, Aria. The child was believed to have drowned during a vacation in Florida, but an autopsy revealed no signs of drowning, leading to questions about potential smothering. Gupta was arrested after an investigation raised suspicions regarding the circumstances of her daughter’s death. As legal proceedings unfold, concerns about Gupta’s mental health and custody issues with her ex-husband have also come to light.
Dr. Neha Gupta, 36, a pediatrician from Oklahoma City, has been formally charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of her 4-year-old daughter, Aria Talathi. The incident took place during a vacation in El Portal, Florida, where Gupta was staying at a short-term rental home.
On June 27, 2025, Gupta called emergency services reporting that her daughter was drowning in a swimming pool at the rental property. First responders arrived promptly to find Aria unresponsive in the pool. Despite immediate medical intervention, Aria was transported to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly afterward.
An autopsy was conducted to determine the cause of Aria’s death. Contrary to initial reports, which suggested drowning, the autopsy revealed no water in her lungs, a typical feature of drowning victims. Instead, medical examiners discovered physical injuries including cuts in Aria’s mouth and bruises on her cheeks. These findings raised suspicions of possible smothering or other forms of inflicted trauma, prompting an extended investigation into her death.
Following the autopsy results, law enforcement authorities in Miami-Dade County obtained an arrest warrant for Dr. Gupta. The warrant was issued based on investigative evidence and consultations with the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office. Gupta was arrested in Oklahoma City on July 1, 2025, at her residence. She was subsequently extradited to Miami-Dade County to face charges.
Currently, Gupta is being held without bail. She has entered a plea of not guilty to the charges of first-degree murder. Her legal team has described the arrest as highly aggressive, noting that officers forcibly entered her home, where she was reportedly hiding in her laundry room at the time of arrest. Body camera footage documenting her arrest was released, showing officers forcibly entering her residence and subduing her.
Gupta’s attorney, Richard L. Cooper, states that her client believed someone had unlawfully entered her home, which was the basis of her call to emergency services. Cooper also claims her cooperation during the arrest was apparent, and describes the circumstances as “extremely violent,” emphasizing that Gupta posed no threat to the officers or the community at the time.
Gupta is also involved in a contentious divorce and custody dispute with her ex-husband, Dr. Saurabh Talathi. He reported concerns regarding her mental health and was unaware that she had taken Aria out of state during the period leading up to her death. The father is seeking full custody of Aria and has expressed alarm over her travel with Gupta.
Authorities in Miami-Dade County plan to hold a court hearing for Gupta on August 7, 2025. Her legal representatives have characterized her daughter’s death as a tragic accident, criticizing the police and prosecutors for what they see as a premature decision to charge her without conclusive evidence.
This case continues to generate public attention, with officials emphasizing the importance of thorough investigation and adherence to legal procedures. As the legal process unfolds, authorities remain focused on establishing the full circumstances surrounding Aria Talathi’s death.
