The football field at Raines High School, empty ahead of the planned season opener.
Raines High School has announced the cancellation of its season opener against Miami Central originally scheduled for August 23. The cancellation comes as a disappointment for local football fans, with no specific reasons provided. Raines is exploring options for a replacement game, while fans will receive refunds for tickets purchased. The season opener cancellation could impact the rankings of both teams, as Miami Central is currently ranked No. 11. Raines is set to play its first game against Sandalwood on August 29.
In a development that has disappointed local football fans, Raines High School announced the cancellation of its scheduled August 23 season opener against Miami Central. The decision was made public early Thursday morning, August 14, via the school’s official social media pages. As a result, the game will not be played, and both teams will forgo the initial contest of their high school football seasons.
School officials cited factors beyond their control for the game’s cancellation. A spokeswoman from the Department of City Public Schools (DCPS) mentioned that the inability to coordinate an acceptable start time contributed to the decision. Concerns regarding security and safe weather conditions also played a role in the cancellation, although specific details have not been disclosed.
Miami Central, which is ranked No. 11 in the USA TODAY Florida Network Super 25, will have one less game on their schedule, which might influence their regular-season record and playoff positioning. Raines, ranked No. 20, faces the possibility of playing a nine-game schedule instead of the typical ten, depending on whether a replacement game can be arranged.
Both teams have recent notable histories. Last season, Raines High School finished undefeated in the regular season, winning their first 13 games before falling in the Class 3A state final to Miami Northwestern. Meanwhile, Miami Central started their previous season with an 8-1 record but forfeited eight games due to fielding an ineligible player, which impacted their overall statistics and postseason prospects.
Additionally, Raines experienced a canceled game last year against Madison County due to Hurricane Milton. Madison County advanced to win the FHSAA Rural championship that season.
Following the canceled opener, Raines will host Sandalwood as their season’s first game. The team is also scheduled to hold their Kickoff Classic on August 15 at KIPP Bold City, providing fans with an opportunity to see players before the regular season begins.
In line with ongoing sports coverage, those interested in following the teams’ games can access live streams via the NFHS Network. Fans can benefit from a 25% discount on a yearly pass in 2025 by using the promo code USATODAY25 before September 7. Details about ticket refunds and further updates have been communicated through the schools’ social media channels, emphasizing transparency and support for disappointed fans.
The cancellation of Raines High School’s season opener marks an unexpected start to the local high school football season. While specific reasons remain undisclosed, safety considerations and logistical challenges appear to be primary factors. Fans, players, and stakeholders are now looking ahead to the remaining schedule and any potential replacement games in the coming weeks.
