The stunning Camiral Golf and Wellness, host of the 2031 Ryder Cup.
The DP World Tour has announced that the 2031 Ryder Cup will take place at Camiral Golf and Wellness in Barcelona, marking Spain’s second hosting of the prestigious tournament. Previously hosted in 1997, the upcoming event will continue the tradition of international golf competitions in Spain. The venue, known for its scenic courses, will also host several preparatory tournaments leading up to the Ryder Cup, significantly boosting local tourism and economic growth.
Barcelona, Spain — The DP World Tour has announced that the 2031 Ryder Cup will be held at Camiral Golf and Wellness, a prominent golf venue located in the Catalonia region, just outside Barcelona. This marks a significant moment for Spain, as it is set to become the second country in its history to host the prestigious golf tournament twice.
Spain previously hosted the Ryder Cup in 1997 at the Valderrama Golf Club. That edition is remembered for the leadership of Seve Ballesteros, the Spanish golf legend who served as captain for the European team. In that year, Europe narrowly defeated the United States with a score of 14.5 to 13.5, a close and memorable contest in Ryder Cup history.
The country was also a candidate to host the 2022 Ryder Cup but narrowly lost the bid to Italy. Rome subsequently hosted the event in 2023, continuing the tournament’s tradition in Europe but not in Spain. The upcoming 2031 edition at Camiral signals Spain’s return to the spotlight after decades of waiting.
The decision follows over ten years of anticipation, since the DP World Tour typically announces future hosts approximately eight years prior to the event. The choice of Camiral Golf and Wellness will see the venue hosting the Ryder Cup as part of a broader sequence of tournaments leading up to the main event.
Prior to hosting the Ryder Cup, Camiral will be the venue for the Catalunya Championship in 2028, 2029, and 2030. These events serve as key preparatory competitions and help showcase the course to a global audience before the 2031 tournament.
Camiral Golf and Wellness, formerly known as PGA Catalunya, has built a strong reputation within the professional golf community. It has hosted multiple editions of the Spanish Open in 2000, 2009, and 2014 and has regularly been a host for the Final Stage of the DP World Tour Qualifying School for eight years. Its status as a prominent golf destination is well established.
The venue covers a substantial area, featuring two primary courses: the Stadium Course and the Tour Course. Originally, plans included constructing a new third course specifically for the Ryder Cup, but these plans were halted by the Catalan government. Instead, a composite course will be utilized, comprised of selected holes from both existing courses, with final configurations to be determined over the next several years.
The Ryder Cup is renowned worldwide for its ability to generate substantial economic benefits and visibility for the host region. The tournament attracts thousands of visitors, international media coverage, and sponsorships, all contributing to local economic growth.
In the case of Barcelona, the Catalan government plans to contribute approximately €40 million to support hosting costs. Such public investment underscores the tournament’s significance as a driver for tourism, infrastructure development, and international recognition.
The event will feature sponsorship from local companies, including Estrella Damm, an iconic brewing company founded in Barcelona in 1876. Estrella Damm has been named the Official Beer of the 2031 Ryder Cup and will serve as the title partner for the Estrella Damm Catalunya Championship, set to begin in 2026. These partnerships highlight the tournament’s integration into regional culture and commerce.
The 2031 Ryder Cup will follow other notable editions, including the 2025 event at Bethpage Black in the United States, the 2027 in Ireland at Adare Manor, and the 2029 at Hazeltine National in Minnesota. This sequence underscores the tournament’s global reach, with the 2033 Ryder Cup scheduled to be hosted in San Francisco. Other upcoming locations include Washington D.C. in 2037. The site for 2035 remains under consideration.
Speculation suggests that Sergio Garcia, another celebrated Spanish golfer, could be appointed as the European captain for the 2031 Ryder Cup, following a tradition of notable players leading their teams. The selection will be announced closer to the event date.
