Girona, Spain has been selected as the host city for the 2031 Ryder Cup, marking Spain’s second time welcoming this prestigious golf tournament. The Camiral Golf and Wellness Resort, known for its challenging layouts and top-tier facilities, will be the venue. This decision signifies Spain’s prominence in the golf world, following its last Ryder Cup in 1997. Upcoming tournaments will continue to highlight Spain as a critical location for international golf events, solidifying its reputation as a prime golf destination.
The 2031 Ryder Cup will be held in Girona, Spain, marking the second time Spain has hosted this prestigious golf tournament. The confirmation comes from Ramon Nogué, president of the Catalan Golf Federation, who indicated that an official announcement is imminent, expected next week.
The event will be hosted at the Camiral Golf and Wellness Resort, previously known as PGA Catalunya. The choice of the venue was first reported by a major Spanish newspaper and has since been widely accepted as the official site for the 2031 Ryder Cup.
This world-class golf resort has previously hosted several prominent European Tour events, including the Spanish Open. It is renowned for its challenging layout, exquisite facilities, and high-ranking status among Spain’s golf courses. According to Golf Digest, the Camiral course holds the position of No. 3 in Spain.
Spain’s last Ryder Cup appearance on home soil was in 1997 at Valderrama Golf Club in Andalusia. That tournament was notably the first Ryder Cup held in continental Europe. The event drew significant attention and saw the European team narrowly defeating the United States with a score of 14½ to 13½.
The 1997 Ryder Cup is also closely linked with Spain’s golfing icons, including Seve Ballesteros, José María Olazábal, and Sergio García, who helped elevate the sport’s popularity across the country.
The Ryder Cup takes place every two years. The upcoming edition scheduled for September will be hosted at Bethpage Black in New York. The next European Ryder Cup after 2031 is planned for 2027 at Adare Manor in Ireland. Looking further ahead, future matches are scheduled at Hazeltine National in Minnesota in 2029 and the Olympic Club in San Francisco in 2033.
The Camiral Golf and Wellness Resort has been owned by Irish businessman Denis O’Brien since 2008. Since acquiring the property, O’Brien has invested millions of dollars into renovations and upgrades, enhancing both the courses and facilities. These improvements have helped solidify the resort’s reputation as one of the premier golf destinations in Spain and Europe.
The decision to host the Ryder Cup in Girona underscores Spain’s standing as a significant location for international golf. With its history of hosting major tournaments and the recognition of its top-ranked courses, Spain continues to grow its reputation as a notable golf destination.
Ryder Cup organizers have stated that additional details regarding future editions of the event will be announced in due course, indicating ongoing planning for upcoming tournaments and the continued prominence of the competition within the sport.
