Reopened streets bring renewed hope for local businesses and residents in San Antonio's Market Square.
Several streets around Market Square in San Antonio have officially reopened after years of construction. This milestone is part of the city’s revitalization efforts aimed at improving infrastructure, enhancing pedestrian access, and boosting local tourism. Key streets such as Santa Rosa Street have reopened, while other sections remain under construction. Local businesses have felt the impact of ongoing works but hope for increased foot traffic once the project is completed. Authorities advise visitors to plan ahead when visiting the area during ongoing construction.
San Antonio, Texas — Several streets around Market Square have officially reopened after enduring years of ongoing construction, marking a milestone in the city’s revitalization efforts. The reopening aims to improve the area’s infrastructure, enhance pedestrian access, and boost local tourism and business activity.
On July 31, portions of Santa Rosa Street reopened to traffic, allowing both northbound and southbound vehicles to travel between Cesar Chavez Street and Dolorosa Street. Additionally, the intersection of Santa Rosa and Nueva streets was reopened, enabling eastbound and westbound traffic on Nueva to pass through the Santa Rosa intersection. These developments are part of the phased progress in restoring accessibility around Market Square.
However, not all sections are open. The block of Santa Rosa between Dolorosa and Commerce streets remains closed for ongoing reconstruction work. To manage traffic flow during this period, temporary stop signs have been installed at the intersections of Dolorosa and Nueva streets. Construction activities are expected to continue with lane closures, which will be clearly marked using barricades and signage to ensure safety for all road users.
The construction is part of the 2017-2022 Bond Project: Zona Cultural Streets, designed to advance streetscape improvements and pedestrian amenities around Market Square. The initiative began in 2022, focusing on upgrading sidewalks, lighting, drainage systems, and adding bike lanes on Santa Rosa and other streets in the Zona Cultural district.
The project’s overarching goal is to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the area while improving functionality for residents, visitors, and business owners. It aims to create a more inviting environment that can attract more visitors and support local commerce. The improvements are scheduled for completion by summer 2025 and are particularly significant as they will impact major events such as Fiesta San Antonio and the NCAA Men’s Final Four scheduled in the coming years.
The construction has caused frustration among local business owners, who have reported a decline in foot traffic and customer access. Several business owners, including those operating in the Market Square area, have compared the ongoing construction challenges to those faced during the COVID-19 pandemic, citing similar concerns about accessibility and visibility.
Despite these difficulties, some businesses, such as Mi Tierra Café y Panadería and La Margarita Restaurant & Oyster Bar, have remained open throughout the construction period. Local entrepreneurs continue to adapt to the circumstances, hoping that the future improvements will ultimately benefit their operations and attract more visitors to the historic district.
Authorities have advised visitors planning to visit Market Square to plan ahead by checking current road conditions, considering alternative transportation options, and arriving early, especially during peak hours or large events. The ongoing project is expected to enhance the area’s infrastructure, making it more accessible and enjoyable in the long term.
While construction remains active, efforts are being made to minimize disruptions and ensure safety for pedestrians and drivers alike. With the scheduled completion in 2025, local officials anticipate that the revitalization of Market Square and the surrounding streets will significantly contribute to the cultural and economic vitality of San Antonio.
