Selma Sisters Shine at National Youth Leadership Summit

News Summary

Taylor and Gabrielle Cowan from Selma made their mark at the National Police Athletic/Activities League (PAL) Youth Leadership and Mentor Summit in Washington, D.C. Participating alongside over 300 young leaders from across the nation, they learned vital leadership skills and emphasized community engagement, mentorship, and trust between youth and law enforcement. PAL continues to significantly impact youth development, preparing them for academic and career success while fostering positive relationships with police.

Selma has become a notable center of youth leadership as sisters Taylor and Gabrielle Cowan recently participated in the National Police Athletic/Activities League (PAL) Youth Leadership and Mentor Summit in Washington, D.C. Held on July 11, this summit attracted over 300 aspiring leaders from 22 states, all representing one of the 71 PAL chapters across the United States.

Among the highlights of the summit was the opportunity for participants to engage in social media interviews, allowing them to share their experiences and insights. The event underscored the theme of cultivating leadership skills aimed at achieving success in both academics and personal careers. The Cowans emphasized the invaluable lessons learned through PAL, focusing on core values and the significance of building networks for future opportunities.

Established to foster positive engagement between youth and police, PAL serves more than 2 million young people annually. The organization aims to reduce juvenile crime and violence by promoting mentorship and community connections. National PAL’s CEO expressed the crucial role of adult mentors in guiding youth on constructive paths to healthier and more prosperous futures. The organization’s initiatives focus on developing trust and relationships, which play a vital role in keeping communities safe.

In Selma, Chief Kelly Gordon of the Selma Police Department has been instrumental in expanding PAL programs through the creation of the 11-member PAL Pack. This initiative has involved more than 50 officers in various PAL activities, enhancing the engagement between law enforcement and the community. The program aims to provide a robust framework for youth leadership development.

PAL’s executive director highlighted the transformative experiences that participants undergo. Surveys reveal a significant increase in trust towards law enforcement among PAL participants, with 98% reporting improved perceptions. The success stories are evident in individuals like former PAL member Romeo Lopez, who is now a police officer and credits PAL with significantly shaping his sense of independence and personal success.

Beyond leadership, PAL engages its youth through a dedicated Youth Leadership Council that emphasizes character development and community service. All PAL participants graduate high school, boasting an outstanding 94% rate of either pursuing further education or entering the workforce. This demonstrates PAL’s effectiveness in preparing young people for future challenges.

PAL has also implemented programs centered around public safety and criminal justice, allowing teens to gain practical insights and experiences. Interactions between officers and youth during these programs aim to foster a sense of community and trust, important elements in cultivating a safer environment.

Funding for PAL primarily comes from community grants and donations from the private sector, ensuring the continued operation and expansion of its programs. Due to a recent roof collapse at their facilities, PAL has temporarily relocated to the Westside Neighborhood Center but is expected to return to its original location next month, continuing to serve the community and its young leaders.

As a result of the summit and the ongoing efforts of organizations like PAL, communities across the nation, including Selma, are witnessing a commitment to developing youth who are well-equipped with the leadership skills necessary for both personal and communal growth.
