Students at Parkland High School demonstrating against staffing cuts that threaten their education.
Hundreds of students at Parkland High School in Winston-Salem organized a walkout to protest significant staffing cuts caused by a budget shortfall in the local school district. The demonstration drew attention to the elimination of 344 jobs across Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools. The incident reflects broader concerns among students about the impact of these staffing reductions on their education, with similar protests occurring at other schools in the district. Community engagement is expected to continue as the district faces a $46 million budget deficit.
On Tuesday morning, students at Parkland High School in Winston-Salem organized a walkout to protest significant staffing cuts announced by the local school district. The demonstration was part of broader concerns over the district’s decision to eliminate approximately 344 jobs across Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools, due to a substantial budget shortfall.
The protest took place at 10:25 a.m. and lasted for about 30 minutes. During this time, hundreds of students gathered in the school parking lot, chanting slogans such as “save our staff, save our future,” “where the money at?” and “remember EC, no teachers, no peace.” Students also rallied at the edge of Brewer Road before returning inside the school premises. The demonstration aimed to draw attention to the impact of staffing reductions on their education and school environment.
The protest at Parkland High School was not isolated. Later that day, students at Atkins High School participated in their own demonstration at approximately 2:50 p.m. reflecting a broader student-led movement across the district to voice opposition to the staffing reductions.
The district’s decision to cut around 344 positions is part of efforts to address a $46 million budget deficit. These reductions involve layoffs, demotions, and furloughs among district staff. As of this week, district officials planned to inform employees affected by the cuts of their employment status.
Human resources representatives at the district’s central office provided assistance to employees impacted by the layoffs, including support related to health insurance and 401(k) retirement plans. One affected employee, Konnoak Middle School Assistant Principal Jamille Rhodes, described the demotion as one of the most difficult moments in his career, highlighting the personal toll the reductions are taking on district staff.
To help affected teachers, district leaders announced plans to hold a job fair in the coming weeks, offering opportunities for employment within the district. Additionally, the district intends to cover COBRA health insurance costs for one year for employees impacted by the layoffs.
A board of education meeting is scheduled for Tuesday evening, providing a platform for community members, students, and staff to share their concerns regarding the staffing cuts. This meeting offers an opportunity for public input before final decisions are made or implemented.
The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools district is facing a significant financial challenge, with a budget shortfall of $46 million. The staffing reductions are part of a broader effort to balance the district’s finances, which have been strained by various economic factors. The cuts are expected to affect more than 350 positions through a combination of layoffs, demotions, and furloughs, impacting teachers, administrators, and support staff across the district.
The district has acknowledged the difficulty of these measures but emphasizes that they are necessary to maintain fiscal stability. Community members and advocates are expected to participate in upcoming discussions to explore alternative solutions and address concerns related to the staffing decisions.
