Construction Projects in Topeka Set to Impact Local Roads This Fall
Topeka, Kansas – Major construction projects are scheduled to begin in Topeka this upcoming fall, affecting key roadways including SE 6th Ave and Fairlawn Road. These improvements aim to enhance transportation infrastructure and address long-standing road maintenance issues.
SE 6th Ave Construction Starting in October
The city announced that major construction on SE 6th Ave will commence in October 2025. The project is designed to repair aging pavement, improve infrastructure, and increase safety for motorists and pedestrians alike.
Historically, SE 6th Ave served as the primary route into Topeka from the east before the construction of the interstate. Today, it remains a vital corridor, especially due to heavy truck traffic caused by nearby industrial sites such as Reser’s. The current pavement, approximately 35 to 40 years old, has begun to show signs of deterioration, including cracks and potholes, prompting the need for comprehensive repairs.
Details of the SE 6th Ave Project
The planned construction will focus on a variety of improvements, including pavement and concrete repairs, curb and gutter replacements, and bridge enhancements over Deer Creek. Despite ongoing work, SE 6th Ave will remain open to traffic during construction. However, drivers should expect lane closures and some delays as work progresses.
Officials expect these upgrades to result in a smoother, more durable roadway upon project completion. The public works director for Topeka, Steve Groen, highlighted that the improvements will lead to safer and more efficient transportation in the area.
Project manager Jason Fundis emphasized that local support and responsible use of tax dollars are key to the success of community infrastructure projects. The construction is part of the city’s ongoing efforts to maintain and enhance its transportation network.
Fairlawn Road Construction Experiences Delay
In addition to the SE 6th Ave work, a separate 14-month construction project on Fairlawn Road has been delayed. Originally scheduled to begin earlier, the project is now set to start on August 25, 2025.
During this project, Fairlawn Road will be closed from S.W. 22nd Park to S.W. 25th Street. The scope of improvements includes storm sewer, sanitary sewer, waterline, and pavement upgrades. Prior to the full closure, the road will temporarily reopen to through traffic on August 20, 2025, but will close again on August 25.
The road is expected to remain closed until at least October 23, 2026. In addition, a section of Fairlawn Road from S.W. Shunga Creek to S.W. 25th Street will be reduced to one lane in each direction for pavement repairs, lasting until December 19, 2025.
Impact on the Community and Ongoing Improvements
The ongoing projects reflect Topeka’s commitment to maintaining and improving its infrastructure network. While closures and lane reductions may cause temporary inconveniences, city officials emphasize that these investments are essential for long-term safety and durability of roads.
Overall, the construction efforts on SE 6th Ave and Fairlawn Road demonstrate the city’s strategic approach to infrastructure development, ensuring that key transportation corridors are reliable and capable of supporting the community’s growth and industrial activity.
