President Donald Trump has been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency after experiencing swelling in his legs. Following a health assessment by the White House Medical Unit, doctors confirmed the condition, which is common among individuals over 70 years old. Fortunately, the examination revealed that he is in excellent health otherwise and there are no serious complications like deep vein thrombosis. Management recommendations include medication, compression stockings, and leg elevation to alleviate symptoms.
President Donald Trump, aged 79, has been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) following a health assessment prompted by noticeable swelling in his legs. The White House officially announced this diagnosis during a routine media briefing on Thursday, conducted by Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.
The president observed swelling in his lower limbs, which led to an appointment with the White House Medical Unit for a comprehensive check-up. During the examination, medical professionals performed bilateral lower extremity venous Doppler ultrasounds, a diagnostic tool that assesses blood flow in the leg veins. The results confirmed the presence of CVI, a benign and common condition, especially in individuals over 70 years old.
Chronic venous insufficiency is a vascular condition where veins in the legs struggle to return blood efficiently toward the heart. This dysfunction causes blood to pool in the lower limbs, leading to symptoms such as swelling, pain, and itching. In severe cases, CVI can result in skin changes, ulcers, bleeding, or deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
Research indicates that approximately 10-35% of people over age 70 may have CVI. Several factors can increase the risk of developing this condition, including being overweight, having a history of blood clots, or engaging in occupations that involve prolonged periods of standing or sitting. These factors can impair the proper functioning of the vein valves, worsening blood pooling.
Aside from confirming CVI, doctors found no evidence of associated serious conditions, such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), arterial disease, heart failure, or renal impairment. The examination also revealed that President Trump is in “excellent health” with normal cardiac structure and function.
Recent photographs showing bruising on the back of Trump’s hand were explained as resulting from frequent handshaking and the use of aspirin as part of a cardiovascular prevention regimen. Such minor bruising is common and not related to the diagnosed venous condition.
Doctors advise the president to manage CVI with medication, wearing medical-grade compression stockings, and elevating the legs at night. These measures help reduce symptoms and prevent progression. While CVI is rarely life-threatening, it can cause significant discomfort and reduce mobility if left unmanaged.
President Trump underwent his first annual physical exam of his second term in April and was declared “fully fit” at that time. The recent health assessment was performed “out of an abundance of caution,” according to White House officials.
In the United States, around 150,000 people are diagnosed with CVI annually. Treatment strategies focus on lifestyle changes, medication, and compression therapy, with many individuals effectively managing symptoms and maintaining a good quality of life.
The White House clarified that the recent health evaluations were standard procedures aimed at ensuring the president’s well-being as part of regular health maintenance protocols.
