Trump Turnberry, a renowned golf course in South Ayrshire, Scotland
President Donald Trump has landed in Scotland for a five-day visit that includes meetings with UK and Scottish officials and leisure activities at his golf resorts. His arrival at Glasgow Prestwick Airport was met with protests from various groups opposing his political views and the costs of his visit. Trump’s itinerary features leisure activities at Trump Turnberry and a ribbon-cutting event for a new golf course in Aberdeenshire, as discussions on trade and migration unfold amidst public demonstrations.
President Donald Trump arrived in Scotland on Friday for a scheduled five-day trip focused on meetings with UK and Scottish officials, as well as leisure activities at his own golf resorts. The visit has garnered significant attention, both for its political implications and planned recreational events, while protests against the President’s visit took place in various Scottish cities.
The President’s aircraft, Air Force One, landed at Glasgow Prestwick Airport, which is approximately 50 miles from the Trump Turnberry golf resort. Prestwick is one of Scotland’s busiest airports, accommodating over 7 million passengers in 2023. After arriving, President Trump traveled to his resorts in Turnberry and Aberdeen, where he attended meetings and participated in leisure activities.
Trump spent part of Saturday playing golf at Trump Turnberry located in South Ayrshire. The resort features three golf courses designed by Willie Fernie, with the Ailsa Course ranking among the world’s top 10 golf courses. The original hotel, now known as the Turnberry Hotel, opened in 1905, was initially called Turnberry Station Hotel. The golf course itself opened in 1901 and has historically hosted four Open Championships, including the notable 1977 British Open played between golfers Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus.
During the round of golf, President Trump was joined by his son Eric Trump, U.S. Ambassador Warren Stephens, and their sons. The resort’s 19th-hole restaurant is named “Duel in the Sun”, referencing the famous Watson-Nicklaus match. The Turnberry Lighthouse, built in 1873, marks a hazardous stretch of coast that is visible from the golf course. Adjacent to the course, Turnberry Castle is believed to be the birthplace of Scottish King Robert the Bruce, adding historical significance to the location.
President Trump participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony introducing a second 18-hole golf course at a new development in Aberdeenshire. During the event, he acknowledged the assistance of Scottish actor Sean Connery in helping to start the project, emphasizing his personal ties to Scotland, as his mother was born there.
The Scottish government announced public funding of £180,000 for a golfing tournament to be held at Trump’s Aberdeenshire course, demonstrating some government support for the project. This support comes amid ongoing discussions about trade and economic cooperation during the visit.
The trip has been accompanied by protests in many cities, including Aberdeen and Edinburgh. Protesters voiced opposition to President Trump’s political views and criticized the costs associated with his visit, which are largely borne by taxpayers. Scottish First Minister John Swinney is scheduled to meet with President Trump to discuss issues such as trade relations and regional cooperation.
During his visit, President Trump made comments on migration issues in Europe and criticized wind energy farms, expressing opinions that have drawn media attention. Later in his trip, he is expected to meet with European Union Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, highlighting ongoing diplomatic engagements.
Visits by sitting U.S. Presidents to Scotland are relatively rare, with Trump previously visiting in 2018. His current trip builds toward a planned UK state visit scheduled for September, which will be hosted by King Charles III.
The President’s golf game at Turnberry largely attracted media attention, as national and international observers followed his activities closely. The five-day visit continues to be a mix of political discussions, leisure activities, and public demonstrations, reflecting the broad interest and significance of the trip in Scottish and global contexts.
