Donald Trump wrapped up his four-day visit to Scotland, focusing on whisky tariffs and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Meetings with Scottish officials addressed concerns over the North Sea oil and gas industry, while Trump inaugurated a new golf course. He was urged to reconsider the 10% tariff on Scotch whisky exports, which has impacted the industry significantly. Additionally, Trump acknowledged discussions concerning the ongoing situation in Gaza, demonstrating a willingness to address various international issues during his visit.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump wrapped up a four-day visit to Scotland, during which he engaged in discussions on key issues including whisky tariffs and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The visit included meetings, ceremonial events, and a private departure from the region.
Trump’s meeting with Scottish First Minister John Swinney lasted approximately 15 to 20 minutes at Trump’s Balmedie Estate. During this encounter, Swinney raised concerns about the North Sea oil and gas industry, describing it as “overtaxed,” and emphasized the sector’s importance to the UK economy. Trump also pointed out the value of North Sea oil as a “treasure chest for the UK.” Throughout the visit, Trump highlighted his support for exploiting oil and gas resources and criticized renewable energy efforts such as wind turbines, calling them “ugly monsters.”
Trump officially opened a new golf course at his Aberdeenshire resort. During the ceremony, he expressed his fondness for Scotland, citing his mother’s Scottish heritage, and indicated plans to play on the new course soon. Trump also commented on his commitments abroad, noting that he has helped to “stop about five wars,” underscoring the importance he places on his responsibilities over leisure activities like golf.
In a show of cultural appreciation, Swinney presented Trump with historical documents, including a 1921 Census excerpt and a 1654 map of Lewis. In return, Trump gifted Swinney an American bald eagle figurine. The visit also featured a dinner attended by the UK Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, where discussions extended to trade matters and tariffs.
One of the significant topics raised during meetings was the 10% tariff on Scotch whisky exports to the United States. Swinney urged Trump to reconsider this tariff, which has adversely affected the industry—current estimates suggest that the tariffs are costing the Scotch whisky sector around £4 million weekly. The whisky export market to the US is valued at roughly £971 million in 2024. Swinney underscored the unique nature of Scotch whisky production, which remains exclusive to Scotland, and appealed to Trump’s Scottish heritage to influence tariff negotiations.
Initially, Trump appeared unaware of the whisky tariff issue but expressed willingness to address it, recognizing its importance to the industry and regional economy. The ongoing trade negotiations between the US and the UK are central to resolving these tariff concerns.
In addition to economic discussions, Swinney used the opportunity to raise awareness about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, urging Trump to utilize his influence to push for a ceasefire and bring attention to the ongoing conflict. Trump acknowledged these concerns, signaling a readiness to engage further on international humanitarian issues.
Trump departed Menie on a presidential helicopter, departing from RAF Lossiemouth to return to Washington, D.C. His departure marked the conclusion of a visit characterized by a mixture of diplomatic exchanges, industry discussions, and personal remarks. Trump indicated that he would be returning to the US soon, balancing his overseas engagements with domestic responsibilities.
