Washington, D.C. – Violent crime continues to be a significant issue in Washington, D.C. despite recent claims by President Donald Trump that the capital is “crime free.” On Monday, a man was shot dead and two women sustained injuries in separate shootings. Reports indicate numerous other crimes were reported to law enforcement by citizens on the same day.

Following these incidents, Trump asserted in public remarks and an interview that Washington D.C. now has “no crime.” He further claimed on Wednesday that “there is none,” indicating a belief that crime has entirely disappeared in the city. These statements come at a time when, according to police statistics, overall crime has decreased since the implementation of federal intervention, which involved the deployment of the National Guard.

In August 2025, following Trump’s federal intervention, the Washington Police Union reported that crime dropped by 21% within a mere 21 days. However, this does not mean crime has ceased altogether. Data indicates that there were still over 790 crimes reported in the two weeks ending August 31, including 85 violent offenses. While the overall crime rate has seen a reduction, the claim that crime is “down 100%” is inaccurate.

A comparison of crime data reveals that reported crime in Washington was approximately 28% lower in late August than in the two weeks prior to the federal intervention. In the week ending August 31, the overall crimes reported were about 27% lower than in the week leading up to the intervention; nonetheless, the city still experienced over 375 offenses, alongside a 23% increase in violent crime.

On a more positive note, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser acknowledged a significant decrease in carjackings, reporting an 87% drop during the first 20 days of federal intervention compared to the same timeframe in 2024. It is worth noting that carjackings had already been trending downward prior to federal intervention, having decreased by 64% since July 2024. Recent months have also recorded the lowest number of carjackings since May 2020.

Moreover, Trump pointed to a streak of 12 consecutive murder-free days as evidence of reduced crime, inaccurately suggesting it was the first such stretch in “years.” While this reflects a positive outlook, it overlooks the ongoing violent incidents. This federal operation has also led to numerous arrests, with federal agents detaining 70 individuals on Labor Day, including several illegal immigrants and those charged with violent crimes. Among those arrested were known gang members and individuals with prior convictions for various offenses, including assault and robbery.

Overall, since the start of this federal intervention, a total of 1,669 arrests have been made, involving over 3,200 officials across 22 agencies working together. Additionally, the operation has successfully rescued five missing children.

Part of the broader effort to address crime includes the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department’s (MPD) initiative to clear homeless encampments in the city, highlighting various aspects of the government’s strategies in dealing with crime and public safety. Trump has also complimented Mayor Bowser for her cooperation in these crime reduction efforts, which underscores the collaborative approach towards enhancing community safety.

While statistics reveal a temporary decline in certain areas of crime, the facts surrounding violent incidents underscore that challenges remain in achieving lasting safety and security for the residents of Washington, D.C. The ongoing dialogue surrounding crime rates and public safety continues to evolve against the backdrop of these recent events.
