A street in Washington D.C. experiencing flash flooding following recent thunderstorms.
Washington D.C. is dealing with the aftermath of severe thunderstorms that have led to flash flooding in Virginia areas like Oakton, Vienna, and Reston. Flash flood warnings remain active as streams rise due to heavy rainfall. The storms have caused significant disruptions, including power outages, road closures, and a heat alert in effect for the region. Residents are advised to stay alert for changing weather conditions, as additional thunderstorms are forecasted along with high temperatures and humidity expected in the coming days.
Washington D.C. is grappling with the aftermath of severe thunderstorms that have resulted in flash flooding across the area, particularly affecting areas of Virginia, including Oakton, Vienna, and Reston. Flash flood warnings remain in effect for portions of Prince William and Fairfax counties as streams continue to rise following substantial localized rainfall. Reports indicate rainfall amounts exceeding 2 inches in regions such as Potomac, Maryland, and Reston, Virginia, prompting officials to alert residents to take precautions.
The heavy storms that began earlier in the day have dissipated, but isolated showers and thunderstorms are anticipated to persist overnight. Temperatures are forecasted to dip to lows between 70 to 75 degrees. However, the forecast for tomorrow predicts a return of showers and storms, some potentially producing flooding downpours and gusty winds. High temperatures are expected to reach the mid-80s to nearly 90 degrees.
Some thunderstorms might bring intense bursts of wind, exceeding 50 mph, although no widespread severe threats are expected. The recent storm activity has already led to significant disruptions. Currently, more than 500 customers in Fairfax County are without power, as reported by Dominion Energy, while Montgomery County has fewer than 20 customers affected. The heat continues to be another concern, with a heat alert active in D.C. until Sunday at 8 a.m., predicting feel-like temperatures of 95 degrees or more.
In addition to the flooding, roads have been closed due to high water levels; for instance, Lawyers Road near Soapstone Lane in northern Fairfax County is impassable. Dense fog may develop overnight following the storms, which could further complicate travel and visibility conditions for affected areas.
While tomorrow holds a favorable chance for scattered showers and thunderstorms, conditions are expected to be similar through the week. Highs in the upper 80s to lower 90s are anticipated for Monday, while Tuesday is likely to be warmer with somewhat lower humidity levels, albeit still with chances of thunderstorms. Forecasts indicate that the region will experience typical midsummer heat, with daily highs near or above 90 degrees expected from Wednesday to Friday.
These inclement weather patterns coincide with the region experiencing its seventh 90-degree day of July, peaking today at 91 degrees. Coupled with high humidity levels, the heat indices have soared to around 102 degrees, intensifying the overall discomfort for residents.
Currently, pollen levels present another aspect of local weather, with grass pollen and mold spores at moderate levels, while tree and weed pollens remain low. As the weather evolves, it is essential for residents to stay alert for flash flooding alerts and prepare for changing weather conditions, particularly given the rising temperatures and humidity expected in the coming days.
