WASHINGTON, D.C. — Mike Rizzo, the executive who built the only World Series champion in Washington Nationals history, is chasing a new front-office job with the very team his club beat for that title.
Rizzo, 65, was set to interview Monday in Houston for the Astros general manager opening, according to two people with direct knowledge of the search. Houston has had the post open since it dismissed Dana Brown in August.
Washington topped Houston in seven games in 2019, only weeks before the Astros sign-stealing scandal became public. Rizzo is said to admire Astros owner Jim Crane and the club’s willingness to spend.
Rizzo arrived in Washington in 2006 as an assistant GM, took over as general manager in March 2009 and added the title of president of baseball operations in 2013. His teams won four National League East crowns over six seasons before the 2019 championship. The club fired him and manager Dave Martinez on July 6, 2025.
He had also been in the mix for the Athletics opening this offseason but withdrew. Back in Washington, the Nationals under baseball operations president Paul Toboni and manager Blake Butera won 77 games this year, their best total since 2019.
