WASHINGTON, D.C. — Washington, D.C.’s NFL team came out of its bye week with help on the way, as Commanders coach Dan Quinn said Monday that Marcus Mariota, the veteran quarterback, and Charles Omenihu, a defensive end, were rejoining practice.
Omenihu has sat out the last two games with groin and ankle problems, while Mariota has been working back from a knee injury. Wide receiver Treylon Burks, hurt late in the week six loss, is also set to ease back in. The news was not all good: defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw is still out, and Quinn said his recovery has been slower than hoped.
The bigger hole is at receiver. Terry McLaurin, one of the best pass catchers the franchise has had, suffered a season-ending knee injury in the 23-17 Monday night loss at San Francisco that sent Washington into the break.
Stefon Diggs remains the top target, but rookie Antonio Williams, who has lined up both in the slot and outside, and tight end Chig Okonkwo, who caught seven passes for 69 yards after McLaurin went down, figure to see more of the ball from Jayden Daniels.
Washington is back in prime time Sunday, hosting division rival Philadelphia at 8:20 p.m.
