WASHINGTON, D.C. — A staff member at a Northwest Washington charter school found a handgun tucked inside a box of candy on Thursday while getting ready to pass out treats to young students at a fall celebration.
The discovery happened at Grow Academy, a KIPP DC campus on the 400 block of P Street in Northwest that serves children in prekindergarten and kindergarten. For the Fall Festival, parents were asked to send in packaged snacks bought from stores, with no nuts.
In a statement released Friday, KIPP DC said the employee followed the school safety plan, secured the weapon right away and called the Metropolitan Police Department. The school said no children touched the gun or knew it was there, and everyone on campus was unharmed.
Police with the Metropolitan Police Department confirmed officers took a firearm from the campus. Neither police nor the school has said how the weapon got into the candy, and the case remains under investigation.
KIPP DC said it sent families a written notice and met with staff at the campus in person to explain what happened and how the school responded. The network said it had no more details to share.
