WASHINGTON, D.C. — Mayor Muriel Bowser is set to rally with seniors at Thurgood Marshall Academy Public Charter School in Ward 8 on Monday, Oct. 26, to mark DC College Application and Exploration Month in Washington, D.C.
The citywide push sets aside class time for seniors to work on their applications, and schools are encouraged to put on a college or career event of their own before winter.
Joining the mayor at the campus on Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue SE in Anacostia are Deputy Mayor for Education Paul Kihn, State Superintendent of Education Antoinette S. Mitchell and leaders of the DC Public Charter School Board and the academy.
The law-themed charter school says every graduate who has applied to college since its first class in 2005 has been accepted.
Paying for school is part of the pitch. The DC Tuition Assistance Grant, created by Congress in 1999, pays part of the difference when District students head to public colleges outside D.C. that charge out-of-state rates, and grant holders now study at more than 300 colleges and universities. Students must reapply each year they want the grant.
The mayor’s office plans a live video feed of the event online.
