WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Washington Commanders will play the rest of the season without defensive tackle Daron Payne, who broke a bone in his foot late in practice on Friday, Oct. 30.
The injury was confirmed Saturday as a Jones fracture, the kind of break that usually means a long layoff. Payne becomes the eighth Commanders player headed to injured reserve this year.
The loss stings because Payne rarely sits. He had never missed more than two games in any season and had 14 tackles and a sack through six games this fall.
Washington took him 13th overall in the 2018 draft. Now 29 and in his ninth season, he has started 130 of his 136 games with 38 career sacks and earned a Pro Bowl nod in 2022, when he posted 11.5 sacks. He can become a free agent after this season.
The Commanders, already without receiver Terry McLaurin, host the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night. Getting Jer Zhan Newton back on the field now matters more on a thin defensive front.
