NEW YORK, N.Y. — Saturday Night Live remembered Patrick Stewart at the end of this weekend’s show, rolling the moment from his lone hosting turn in 1994 when he introduced musical guest Salt-N-Pepa, followed by an In Memoriam card.
Stewart, the Star Trek: The Next Generation and X-Men star, died Wednesday at 86 at his home in Los Angeles. His representative said he had faced a short battle with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia.
He hosted on Feb. 5, 1994, a few months before The Next Generation ended its run. That night he ran a bakery for grown-ups only in the Sexy Cakes sketch and showed up as a therapist in a recurring Mike Myers bit about all things Scottish.
In Making It So, his 2023 memoir, Stewart said he found live sketch comedy nerve-racking and ranked his own monologue among the show’s worst. He came to believe his lasting mark was the oddly enthusiastic Salt-N-Pepa introduction, which comedian John Mulaney turned into a well-known stand-up routine and revisited while hosting the show in 2018.
He leaned into the joke in February 2025, marking the show’s 50th year with a clip of himself in a Salt-N-Pepa shirt performing the famous intro again.
